This month I thought that I would talk about HTMA – Hair Testing Mineral Analysis. This is something that I use with some of  you, in order to get a better picture of what is happening with your health.

As you some of you may remember, in my last blog Histamine – PMS & Anxiety pt 3, I mentioned this test. Why? Because sometimes your signs and symptoms may not be improving with the treatment plan. This could be due to a mineral imbalance in your system, which will affect treatment outcomes.

Sometimes the mineral imbalances do not present themselves as obvious sign and symptoms, and your history may not indicate that you have major mineral imbalances.

HTMA –  What Does it Look at?

The Hair testing and Mineral Analysis looks at all of the minerals that can be absorbed and stored in your body.

You need some these minerals for many biochemical processes, some in small trace amounts. While there are other minerals that you do not need and can be toxic when in high levels; but even in small amounts these toxic minerals can disrupt various processes that your body performs every second. As well as influencing the absorption and activity of vitamins within your system.

As with everything within your body, all of these things have to be in balance. Too much or not enough of one thing, can throw things out of whack, which is when you may start to experience general ‘unwellness’.

You will find that many of these essential minerals, or metals, have a major influence on brain function and your hormones. Which ultimately, have direct or indirect effects on all aspects of your health and wellbeing.

Essential Minerals

Boron Copper Molybdenum Sodium
Calcium Iron Phosphorus Sulfur
Chromium Magnesium Potassium Zinc
Cobalt Manganese Selenium

Toxic Minerals

Aluminium Arsenic Cadmium Mercury
Antimony Beryllium Lead uranium

Other Minerals

There are other minerals that are looked at such Lithium (which you also need for brain function), are also looked at. These other minerals can also interfere with may process that your body performs.

Some of these minerals are absorbed from your environment – air, soil, chemicals, cooking utensils, etc.

This form of testing is looking at what you have been exposed to over time, and what your cells are holding onto. Some of the minerals mentioned, in particular the toxic ones, may not show up in blood tests.

So looking at cells, in this case those of your hair, will show me what you have excess, or lack, of. And once your imbalances have been identified by looking at the levels and ratios, I can then put into place strategies to help you clear and restore the balance of minerals.

HTMA  –  How is it Done?

What makes HTMA more attractive, is that it is non-invasive.  That is, there is no blood taken, just some hair. Which also makes this ideal for children.

But before you can go ahead with this test, there are some things that you need to do to make sure that there are no other ‘contaminants’ which can affect your results

  • Clean hair, washed with plain shampoo
  • Your hair is not to be chemical free; if treated you need to wait a few months for regrowth
  • Do not put hair products in hair
  • You need to have hair collection envelop and referral form
  • Here is a link to see how a sample is collected and other instructions

So, in a nut shell, this is what HTMA is. You don’t need to be worried about having one done.

It can help detect small imbalances, which can have a major impact on your life and health.

As always, if you need further support with your health concerns, feel free to contact me to discuss things further. But if it is of urgency, you need to seek medical assistance.
