This month I thought that you would like to know a little about another functional test that I sometimes ask some of you to have – Food Intolerance Test. This test is done by KMBO labs, and I use it to uncover additional causes of inflammation that you may be experience. It helps me to fine tune your treatment plan when some of the usual aims don’t seem to be having its full effect on relieving your symptoms.
This food intolerance test looks at those food items which can affect any part of your body. You may have symptoms manifesting within 45 minutes of having eaten the food item, or it may show up, up to 3 days later!! This is why sometimes it is a little difficult to try and work out what foods are causing your health issues or are making your symptoms worse. And why I also ask you to do a food symptom diary.
The food symptom diary allows me to see what you have been eating and, what symptoms you have been experiencing. But remember that what you eat ‘today’ may not be necessarily the cause of the symptoms that you are experiencing today. It could be from something that you ate yesterday or the day before. This is where the detective work comes into effect.
Why Have a Food Intolerance Test?
As I stated earlier, if your symptoms don’t seem to be improving with the treatment plan, I will ask you to get tested for food intolerance. As you may have mild intolerances to some food, which when eaten in small amounts are ok. But should you be sensitive to certain compounds in foods, for example histamine, and you have a little bit of all of these foods throughout the day or week – here is where you would show symptoms.
Some of these foods may seem unrelated, or it could explain why most times you’re ok, but then there is that one time where you have symptoms. Here you have reached your tolerance level.
Then there are some of you who have what is called cross reactivity. This is where some foods have similar proteins, sugars, or other compounds, causing you to react to an unrelated food item. Sometimes this can also be from plants. For example, coffee and wheat, Agave cross reactivity with Mescal, Pulque, Tequila! Or you may have an allergy to latex, which could make you allergic to bananas, avocados, chestnuts and kiwis.
So as you can see, having this test done can reveal a lot, some of which you did not expect. And once you have your results, it can then make it so much easier to implement a treatment plan for you. One where you will start to see improvements in your overall well being and, be able to manage your symptoms more effectively.
What is the difference with this test?
This Food Intolerance Test looks at two categories of immune activation, triggered by antigens.
General food allergy test look at two types of antibodies produced and is very broad, giving your results of certain food groups. It may not pick up sensitivities. Because this test looks at another immune reaction, it can pick up sensitivities. It looks at immune response compounds that can be produced up to 3 days after exposure, from the smallest amount that you could eat.
Or there is the skin prick test which immunologists do and may not be very pleasant. Because if you are sensitive, you could have lots of very itchy spots on your arm.
This food intolerance test covers a wide range of foods for which you are tested for. So once you get the results, you will know which foods your are sensitive to and how much. This will allow me to implement a food plan, that incorporates the results and a treatment plan that addresses your concerns.
How will the results help me?
Some of the treatment aims may initially incorporate an elimination diet, along with gut healing. As your digestive system has been under ‘attack’ becoming inflamed and not able to function optimally. Once I have been able to heal your digestive system and having things working as they should, you will be able to slowly reintroduce your ‘trigger’ foods to see which you can tolerate and those which you need to keep out of your diet.
This will be something that will take you some time, so you will need to be patient. You will be able to get to the point where you can eat ‘normally’; keeping in mind what to stay away from completely and that which you can have is small amounts. You will also find, that you may have some indirect added improvements with your health and wellbeing!
